The world
Seven strata, from the surface down: material, property, process, form, composition, rules, meaning.
Bridges
- Tile: The unit that carries one piece of the whole: Olivetti's blocks and ribbon tiles, Byzantine tesserae, Martens' glyph cells, a story beat in a sequence. Joins mosaic (form), tessellation (process), glyph cell (form), grid (form), reading order (composition).
- Thread: A line that joins: a sewing thread, a network edge, a rope strand, a ribbon. Joins weaving stitching (process), network graph (form), line hatching (form), ribbon (form).
- Sheet: A translucent layer: Pink Noise's acetate, an overprint ink, a depth plane, a sound layer under a kick. Joins layering (process), opacity (property), overprint (process), plane sheet (form), depth planes (composition).
- Grain: The small random texture of a medium: paper tooth, film grain, pigment granulation, the noise floor. Joins grain texture (property), error as texture (meaning), noise as signal (meaning), film stock (material), paper (material).
- Grid of time: Time laid out as cells: a contact sheet, a temporal mosaic, a 30desk wall of timed studies, numbered steps. Joins time as material (meaning), tessellation (process), held frames timing (process), reading order (composition).
- Stroke: One continuous mark carried by a hand or a flow: a brush spiral, a burin cut, a one-stroke dragon, a letter's skeleton. Joins path stroke (form), advection (process), viscosity (property), line hatching (form), type (material).
- Front: The moving edge between two states: an ink-bloom reveal, a style infection across a grid, a wave front, a burn line. Joins advection (process), diffusion (process), erosion (process), transformation (process).
- Ring: A closed loop that spreads or holds: a ripple, a drum's nodal circle, an iris, a halo. Joins ring orbit (form), wave form (form), resonance pitch (property), aperture eye (form).
- Window: An opening that frames and bends what is seen: Snell's window, the eye, a frame within a frame, a grey rectangle in a flower. Joins aperture eye (form), refraction (property), framing (composition), light (material).
- Tide line: The dark edge left where a liquid stops: a soak-stain rim, an ink bloom's edge, a beach's wrack line, sediment in the medium. Joins sedimentation (process), bleed (process), water (material), pigment (material), absorbency (property).
- Glint: A single bright reflection from a tilted facet: sun glitter on waves, a highlight on glass, a specular dot. Joins gloss reflectance (property), light (material), water (material), wave form (form).
- Drop: A unit of liquid added to a medium: a pigment drop, an ink drop in water, a raindrop, a kick that ducks the pad. Joins diffusion (process), surface tension (property), water (material), ink (material), pigment (material).
- Joint: The cut between parts that lets a whole be taken apart and rebuilt: an I-beam mark between premises, a grout line between tesserae, a cut in a recut film, a seam in a parts tree. Joins decomposition measure (process), argument structure (process), tessellation (process), collage recut (process).
Rules
- Composition: Foreground frames, midground holds the character and focal point, background sets the scene; each plane has one job.
- Composition: Horizon placement and mass size make or break a vertical frame; a 50/50 split is a hard sell and equal masses feel the same.
- Composition: Pattern colour temperature at the macro level (cool sky, warm ground) and alternate it at the micro level; put red in foliage shadows.
- Composition: Neutral pose, camera and background connect to a character; dynamic ones build tension; mixing them carelessly causes dissonance.
- Craft: Readability is king: contrast serves separation and the focal point before poetry.
- Canon: One hot mark per view; colour is verdict-only in UI.
- Canon: No taglines, helper text or secondary labels; if a screen needs them, redesign it.
- Canon: Two type families only, one grotesk and one mono; hierarchy from weight and size.
- Canon: Break every reference into parts and recombine them into our own system; never copy piecewise.
- Craft: Tesserae are laid in courses (andamento) that follow the form's contour, so the flow of the tiles describes the shape.
- Craft: Erosion should follow local stroke width so thin parts of a letter survive.
- Craft: In intaglio, tone comes from line density and width under a raking light, never from flat fill; the edge exists where cuts end.
- Craft: Fix the time (a 30-minute lock) so the study gets finished; the time becomes part of the work ('Done in mm:ss').
- Craft: Physical imperfection (ink spread, paper grain, registration error) makes motion feel alive.
- Physical: A dye spreads with radius growing as the square root of time (r ~ t^0.5); a moving front grows linearly.
- Physical: Evaporating liquid carries suspended pigment to the drying edge and leaves it there as a rim.
- Physical: Overlapping transparent inks multiply their transmissions; real inks absorb outside their band, so the ideal multiply misses hue.
- Physical: Light through a medium falls off exponentially with depth, red first in water.
- Physical: Light bends at an interface by the ratio of refractive indices; from under water the sky shows as a window of half-angle 48.6 degrees.
- Physical: A shape sets its resonances, but the resonances do not always fix the shape (Kac 1966; Gordon, Webb and Wolpert 1992).
- Physical: A thin layer reflects colours that interfere constructively at its thickness; the hue walks with thickness and angle.
- Physical: A yield-stress paint flows only where pushed past its yield value and holds ridges elsewhere.
- Music: Keep the third thin or absent; the minor colour comes from a fifth plus a flat sixth.
- Music: Make the flat sixth (bVI, or b6 over the pedal) the main colour move; lead cells repeat one colour tone (5, b6 or 9).
- Music: The pad dips about 6 dB under each kick (5.9 dB on 92% of kicks in Stolie): separation by ducking.
- Music: The room is a dark 1 to 2 s space with one wide return; harmony low-passed under about 1 kHz with slow attacks; drums carry the only brightness.
- Physical: Perceived change follows the ratio, not the difference: each added transparent layer reads as a smaller step, so a fifth layer barely reads darker (Albers, Interaction of Color, plate XX-1).
- Craft: A video's colour comes from the grade after shooting, not from the camera alone.
- Craft: Split an argument into premises, presuppositions and conclusions; read conjunctions as turns or continuations; mark the movements (chain, list, turn) so the whole can be rebuilt. The same decomposition the art studies use, applied to text.
- Craft: Art deco builds from a closed motif set (fan, feather, fountain, palm, peacock, scallop, sunburst, waves, volute, clouds, chevron, aircraft fin) stepped and mirrored about an axis, with light as a material (floodlit towers, the Chrysler crown).
