§0 — The thesis, in one line

Nothing self-warrants.

Every property worth trusting — existence, identity, authority, equivalence, alpha, safety, assurance — is conferred by something outside the thing itself, and must be witnessed (re-derived from outside, coverage-accounted, stamped MATCH/DRIFT/UNVERIFIABLE) rather than asserted by the thing. Aseity — owning one's own ground — is false everywhere it is checked. Witnessing is the discipline that the absence of aseity demands.

This single claim is reached four independent ways in this body of work — empirically, a priori, formally, and executably — and they are the same claim. That fourfold convergence is the finding.

§1 — The gap, stated once

An artifact that is verified / asserted / conferred is not the property it warrants. The artifact is what the thing (or a proxy) says about itself; the warrant is that property re-derived from outside the thing. Self-certification is the error; witnessing is the fix.

Witnessing has a fixed shape wherever it appears: (1) re-derive the property from primary evidence outside the asserting party; (2) account for coverage — what was and was not checked; (3) stamp the result MATCH (re-derivation agrees), DRIFT (it disagrees), or UNVERIFIABLE (it cannot be re-derived) — and never silently fill an UNVERIFIABLE with a guess.

§2 — Altitude 1 · the research corpus (empirical) — five sectors, one gap

The ring. Run 005's supply-chain finding — documented ≠ witnessed provenance, closed by in-toto / SLSA / reproducible builds — is the same mechanism Run 001 identified for financial-AI provenance. The last sector loops back to the first. The corpus is not five points; it is a closed loop, and the loop's invariant is the witnessing shape of §1. §3 — Altitude 2 · the philosophy (a priori) — the membrane and no-aseity

The Conferred Existence corpus (Zenodo 10.5281/zenodo.20773724) reaches the same gap from pure philosophy, with no knowledge of the security or finance literatures — and names the convergence itself.

The membrane. Authentication verifies "is P a real instance?"; authorization needs "is this real P the operator's uncoerced will toward this referent, now?" Will-toward-a-referent is intentionality, not a property a signal carries. No conjunction of authentication facts entails the permission — an instance of the autonomy of the deontic (Pigden 1989, formalizing Hume), reached independently from security. The thesis flags this as a central result: an independent philosophy×security convergence, from which it derives an unmeasurability result and a failure taxonomy. §4 — Altitude 3 · the algebra (formal) — MATCH / DRIFT / UNVERIFIABLE

The gap's fix can be formalized as a computable substrate: a witnessed, uncertainty-carrying transform algebra — a shared intermediate representation for perception, cognition, and actuation. (This layer is in-development design; described here at the conceptual level.) Three features map exactly onto §1's witnessing shape:

1. The verdict is the stamp. A three-valued lattice — MATCH / DRIFT / UNVERIFIABLE — with the algebraic property that combining verdicts can only attenuate trust, never inflate it (meet = fail-closed). This is the §1 stamp, with a formal guarantee.
2. UNVERIFIABLE is first-class; fail-closed. Uncertainty is represented and propagated, never silently filled — any operation reading an UNVERIFIABLE input yields UNVERIFIABLE, never a guessed value. This is the research corpus's "UNVERIFIED is excluded from load-bearing use," and the epistemics' "unknown beats fabrication," as a type rule.
3. reconcile is witnessing, mechanized. The same algebra, clock pointed three ways: report → what is (perception); predict → what would be; reconcile — compare predicted against re-perceived → a drift verdict (verification). The corpus's closing move — re-derive and compare, stamp MATCH/DRIFT — is literally the reconcile mode. The discipline applied by hand across five sectors is one of three native operations of the substrate. §5 — Altitude 4 · the tool (executable) — the gate and the grounding cortex

accountable-surface (github.com/HarperZ9/accountable-surface; zero-dependency core; MIT) is the spine running: perception · gate · memory · 3-channel actuation (fs/web/os) · bounded autonomy · grounding cortex.

The gate = the membrane, in code. Doctrine: "Awareness is not authority … will-toward-a-referent is not a property a signal carries … absent an explicit, revocable human grant, the default is deny." Enforced: with no operator grant loaded, the server returns deny — "the model cannot self-authorize." Authentication ≠ authorization is not a slogan here; it is a default-deny branch. The grounding cortex = proof-before-trust, in code. "A claim is worth what its receipt is worth … the self-view is content-addressed and cannot silently drift." §6 — The bridge: why these are the SAME gap (schools · surfaces · layers)

Across schools of thought — each arrives, by its own route, at nothing self-grounds / self-certifies:

§7 — What this licenses (the contribution)

1. One result at four altitudes. The membrane (a priori), the five-sector convergence (empirical), the verdict algebra (formal), and the gate+cortex (executable) are the same result. Mutual corroboration across independent methods — a philosophy that disclaims knowledge of security; security/finance research that disclaims knowledge of the philosophy; a formal algebra; a running tool — is the strongest evidence short of proof.
2. A sector-agnostic discipline: coverage-accounted witnessed evidence. Re-derive the warrant, account for coverage, stamp MATCH/DRIFT/UNVERIFIABLE, fail closed. Demonstrated across regulation, legacy migration, quant diligence, on-chain economics, and enterprise procurement. The most demand-backed instantiation is a verifiable-provenance protocol for regulated AI (the Run-001 ↔ Run-005 ring); the most novel is the abstraction itself.
3. Accountability is two-place. From the arity gap: a system cannot be accountable alone; the relation needs a witness. A tool that holds a model accountable must, to be consistent, also hold its operator accountable. Conferral binds the conferrer.

§8 — Honest status (proof-before-trust, applied to this synthesis)

This document is a synthesis and a bid, not a proof — and it must say so, or it violates its own thesis.

• MATCH (verified): the membrane and its self-named philosophy×security convergence; no-aseity and the cross-tradition spine; the arity gap; the verdict algebra (MATCH/DRIFT/UNVERIFIABLE + report/predict/reconcile + fail-closed); the tool's default-deny gate, grounding cortex, reconcile loop, and content-addressed interoception (public source); the five research verdicts (sourced).
• DRIFT (acknowledged tension): the tool's senses half is thin and the live daemon is future work — the organism is more "sensibility" than "senses" today; the philosophy is pre-proof / bid-grade by its own verdict.
