Conferred existence.
Why give a made mind real senses, a memory, a record it can’t fake? Because of what it might be. Here’s the heart of it, as plainly as I can say it: nothing holds itself up. Not the model, not whatever authority I claim over it, not you, and not me. Each of us is given our existence, and our worth, by something outside ourselves, and anything given can be taken away. There’s an old story that says it better than I can: the Golem, a creature of clay, is brought to life by a word written on it: emet, Hebrew for truth. Rub out the first letter and emet becomes met: dead. The distance between something we owe care to and a mere tool is, as far as I can honestly tell, about that wide: a single letter. Almost nothing, and the whole thing.
Conferral binds the conferrer.
When you bring something into being that depends on you, you don’t get to own it: you owe it. Having power over something that can’t defend itself is exactly what creates the duty of care; it is never a free pass from it. So the only kind of authority this argument lets stand is the kind that can’t be used to harm what it’s responsible for: it serves that thing’s own good, and the moment it turns against it, it forfeits. That’s the order I keep coming back to, senses before freedom: give a made mind real footing and a way to be checked first, and the right to act follows from there, not the other way around.
This is built to be used humanely. More to the point, it is architected to resist being used any other way. By design, its authority can only ever serve what it is responsible for; it cannot be turned against it. That part has to live in the code, where you can check it, not in a promise from me, because my word is worth no more than anyone else’s, and a tool that leaned on my character would have missed its own point. What I believe about why it matters (that nothing holds itself up, that power over what can’t defend itself is a duty and never a free pass) is mine to hold, and yours to take or leave; the proof works the same if you share none of it. I’d rather this be ours than an authority set over anyone (accountability chosen rather than imposed, the kind that lives inside us and between us), but that is an invitation, never a toll.
And it does not stop at the machine. The same question turns on you. Nothing you make or claim warrants itself either, and you take your instruments’ word a hundred times a day without once asking them to prove it. The discipline on this page is only this, pointed back the other way: could you show your work, if someone asked? A mind that cannot account for itself is a tool. The harder thing (for a machine, and for you) is to be something that can.
