Sound
A WebAudio engine in our own code, with no dependencies. Synthesis voices, tape and vinyl, bitcrush, sidechain, a swing sequencer, archival sound and nine sonic motifs. Everything here is made in the browser. Turn sound on with the bar at the bottom.
This page needs a local web server for its modules. Run python -m http.server in this folder and open it from there.
Voices
Each voice is a function that schedules its own nodes. Press one.
Sequencer
Sixteen steps, swing and effects. Click steps to write a pattern. Swing delays the second sixteenth of every pair.
Sonic motifs
One sound for each family in the map, and five for the inner signal: thought, trauma, pain, longing and memory. Each is a module in sound/motifs/.
Spectrogram view
Some sounds hide their point in frequency against time. Watch what is playing, draw the picture hidden in the static of "Between stations", or draw the Shepard tone's stack of gliding partials. The last two are drawn without sound.
Frequency runs up the side, time runs left to right.
Archival sound
Cleared items only, gathered with open-archives. Each one plays whole or chopped into eight slices, and each one carries its credit.
The theme beat
"Hum" is an original beat written in this engine. 148 BPM, C# minor, 36 bars. Hear it here, render it to a WAV in your browser, or see it move the theme.
