What it is, and who made it
Acrylic washes on a pale ground: a turquoise field with dark round blots ringed at their edges and thin dark lines along the lower edge.
Parts, layer by layer
- Ground: pale raw-looking ground showing at the borders (O).
- Wash: thinned paint soaked into the ground; palette leads #557e7d, #9d8e6d, #6f8477 (M).
- Blots: dark purple and teal discs with darker rims (O): pigment carried to the drying edge.
- Measures: spectral slope β 3.05 (very smooth, M), edge softness 15.2 (soft, bled edges, M).
- Fluid reading: diffusion, viscosity (thinned paint), opacity; additive pigment; tide lines; processes bleed, diffusion, sedimentation, layering.
The framework behind it
Soak-stain: the ground is part of the medium. Thin paint diffuses into it and deposits at the drying edge (the coffee-ring effect). Colour, edge and rim are set by how wet, how thin and how absorbent.
The same idea in distant fields
- Coffee rings and watercolour backruns.
- Chromatography: compounds travel different distances through paper.
- River deltas: sediment drops where flow slows.
- Tie-dye and batik.
Dual edge
Stain techniques read as calm and natural; used for data they can soften a hard number. Keep them out of anything that reports a value.
