Manufactured consensus

We are here

Eight accounts, eight voices.

It looks like a crowd. Every point in it is a voice, and every voice says the same thing at the same moment. Pull the dots apart and look at their traces: they were never eight. A ventriloquist's dummy has a mouth that moves, and nobody in the room thinks the dummy is talking. On a timeline they do.

FIG. 13. Manufactured consensus. Crowd: a photograph of the crowd outside the New York Stock Exchange, 1929, and ventriloquist figures from the early 1900s, Wikimedia Commons, public domain. All points share one waveform in the dot field; the pointer bends them. Credits.
